Join hosts Rob Pollard and Paul Dickov as this eagerly-awaited sit down with our diminutive and versatile playmaker talks football and plenty more besides - including his disdain for his team-mates’ dress sense... “I don’t like the way 90% of them dress and I don’t agree I dress the worst...” he smiles - in response to the stick they give him, it has to be said!
Bernardo reveals his early days and how he first became interested in football back in Portugal.
He talks about how his physicality led to doubts about whether he could make it at the top level, and how he kept going because of the belief he had in his own talent.
“I had the motivation to prove people wrong and that football could be played in different ways,” Bernardo responds as Dickov relates his own size to early difficulties and how he used that hurt as an extra incentive to prove doubters wrong.
“Have fun and enjoy yourself,” Bernardo advises youngsters who might have similar issues in their early career, urging them to find other ways to show how they can benefit the team.
He also recalls his days at Monaco alongside superstar Kylian Mbappe and the mindset of that team and the fun he had with the Ligue 1 side.
And then there was that epic Champions League clash between Monaco and City at the Etihad, with the Blues triumphing in an unforgettable 5-3 first leg victory.
On his many successes with City, he says it is a “dream come true” and that he couldn’t have asked for any more from his team-mates, the staff, coaches and the supporters.
“The fans want to see passion and fight for their club and that’s what we try to do 100% every time we play,” he adds.
“The support we get from our fans is unbelievable.”
