The Champions League, under the lights and Real Madrid the visitors... it was all set for a special night in East Manchester.
The result was a pulsating clash between two teams who have become familiar rivals in recent times.
City needed a monumental performance to overturn a 3-0 first leg deficit, and did everything but score in a manic opening 15 minutes.
Madrid took the lead through a Vinicius Jr penalty - awarded for a Bernardo handball that resulted in the skipper’s dismissal - on 20 minutes.
But the Blues battled bravely, levelling the scores before half-time and saw two goals disallowed in the second-half.
Madrid won the game with the last kick, but it was a magnificent effort from the Blues.
