We went to the Spanish capital to take on Alvaro Arbeloa’s side, knowing the clash would be complete in Manchester six days later.
Having finished eighth in the league phase, we had progressed straight to the Round of 16 while ninth placed Real had to come through a play-off against Benfica to get this far.
It is the fifth successive campaign in which we’ve met Real Madrid in the knockout stages and sixth in seven years, with City getting through in two of the last five and Real succeeding in the others.
This game was taking place just over three months on from our last trip to Bernabeu, when Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland goals earned us a league phase victory.
