A highly entertaining contest against Liverpool went to penalties after Joel Matip cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s early opener and in the shootout, Claudio Bravo again showed his quality.

The Chilean ‘keeper saved from Georginio Wijnaldum and watched his team-mates score all five spot-kicks, as he marked his return from injury with a match-winning performance.

It was a game which matched the intensity of last season’s battle for the Premier League.

Sterling scuffed a volley through Alisson in the 12th minute as City started strongly, but Liverpool gained momentum after the break and Matip headed home from six-yards to send the game to penalties.

It might have been different, though, but for Kyle Walker, whose acrobatic goalline clearance stopped Salah winning it at the death.
