Still one of the most iconic celebrations in Premier League history...

Ireland is Superman takes its name from the terrace chant inspired by the midfielder’s unforgettable celebration against Sunderland, when he dropped his shorts to reveal a pair of Superman underpants.

It ensured Ireland his place in City folklore, but there was much more to his time at the Etihad Stadium.

An Academy graduate, he made 175 appearances over five years during which he became one of the most influential players at the Club, with his potent blend of touch, vision and tireless work rate.

He reached his peak in 2008/09, scoring 13 goals in 50 appearances to win City’s Player of the Year award after a hugely impressive campaign in which he was one of the key architects of our memorable run to the UEFA Cup quarter-final.

Ireland, who turns 38 today, remains fondly remembered at the Etihad and in this CITY+ documentary we recall the golden period of his career, with contributions from the likes of Elano, Nedum Onuoha, Jack Grealish, Esme Morgan and, of course, the man himself.
