Our first home fixture of the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign had it all.
Gareth Taylor‘s side controlled the early stages of the contest, with Chloe Kelly‘s stunning strike seeing us take the lead inside eight minutes.
But then the game was turned on its head when City were reduced to ten after captain Alex Greenwood was shown a second yellow, much to her and the majority of the 5,000-strong Joie Stadium crowd’s bemusement.
It was an uphill battle for the hosts from then on, which was made even more difficult when Lauren Hemp was also dismissed for a second bookable offence, meaning City finished the match with nine players.
Chelsea continued to pile on the pressure and, while they would ultimately find the equaliser deep into stoppage time, Taylor’s side used all of their experience and tenacity to preserve the point.
It was a heroic display from City, with young goalkeeper Khiara Keating producing some outstanding saves between the sticks.
City are now 20 games unbeaten in the WSL on home soil, with Emma Hayes’ side dropping points for the first time in eight matches, when they last came to the Joie Stadium in March 2023.
