The Carabao Cup is a competition Manchester City love. We’ve won it four times in succession and our bid for a fifth straight success got off to a flyer on Tuesday in a thoroughly entertaining game.
As ever in the early rounds, Pep Guardiola used this competition to blood some of the Academy’s most promising youngsters. Five EDS players started – and with Phil Foden also in lineup, it meant we had more Academy graduates in the starting XI than not.
CJ Egan-Riley, Luke Mbete, Finley Burns, Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Romeo Lavia all started and made their first appearances for the senior side, James McAtee made his debut from the bench – and Cole Palmer scored his first goal for the club after being introduced late on
It was a wonderful night for our Academy.
After the match, we heard from Pep, all the debutants and the scorer of arguably the goal of the night, Cole Palmer – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Paul Dickov and Michael Brown.
