Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored a brace apiece, with Ilkay Gundogan netting the other as we bounced back from our Manchester derby defeat in emphatic fashion.
City were made to work hard for the victory against a Southampton side who started stronger, but fell behind when De Bruyne tapped in on the rebound after Alex McCarthy parried Phil Foden’s initial shot.
The visitors levelled inside 10 minutes, with James Ward-Prowse converting a penalty when Aymeric Laporte hauled down Jannik Vestergaard at a corner and City then had our penalty appeals turned away referee Jon Moss and the VAR officials ruled McCarthy got a touch on the ball as he brought down Foden.
Our frustrations were eased when Mahrez capitalised on Che Adams misplaced pass to restore our lead with a fine finish before the break and Gundogan added a third in first half added time, steering in from close range after the Algerian winger saw another effort come back of the post.
Mahrez got his second and City’s fourth shortly after the restart, when he collected Foden’s pass, swivelled and picked out the bottom corner, but Adams pulled one back immediately.
De Bruyne added a fifth when he combined with Foden and broke past the Saints backline to fire past McCarthy.
