Erling Haaland was denied twice in quick succession by Emi Martinez in City’s best chance of the game.
Haaland’s initial strike in the first half was met by a low Martinez dive before the ball was played back to Haaland at the back post by Bernardo Silva.
Haaland’s second attempt, a header, was palmed wide by an on-rushing Martinez.
Late in the second half, it was a Leon Bailey deflected strike which gave the hosts a 1-0 lead and all three points at full-time.
