However, the hosts were fast out the blocks after the interval and equalised with 20-minutes remaining of the fixture when Josko Gvardiol powerfully headed home.
Despite late chances for both teams, the score remained 1-1, leaving it all to play for in the deciding second-leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday 14 March (20:00 UK).
