Sterling steered into the bottom corner in the 16th minute after Kevin De Bruyne picked him out with a brilliant ball across goal.
In an entertaining contest at St Mary’s, Bernardo Silva spurned a glorious chance to double City’s lead, whilst Ederson made good saves to keep out Theo Walcott and Jannik Vestergaard.
The home side had a penalty appeal dismissed by VAR after a cross skipped up off the turf and onto Sterling’s arm and City produced another impressive defensive display to hold on for all three points.
