City had sunk from the Premier League to the depths of Division Two over the course of three miserable seasons, 1995/96 to 1997/98, under four managers – Alan Ball, Steve Coppell, Frank Clark and finally Joe Royle.
Royle had been unable to save us in the final stages of the 1997/98 campaign as we finished third from bottom and went down alongside Stoke and Reading.
The 1998/99, the first full season under former striking great Royle, offered hope and, after a shaky start, we made the Play-Offs.
After beating Wigan in the semi-finals over two legs, we faced Gillingham, who has vanquished Preston, in the showpiece at the national stadium.
City were heavy favourites against a Gills side, managed by Tony Pulis, who had never played at Wembley before.
But at 2-0 down late on, all looked lost but goals from Kevin Horlock and Paul Dickov turned the game on its head and Nicky Weaver was the penalty hero in the shoot-out as City earned promotion back to Division One as we charted a course back to the big time.
