City Under-18s goalkeeper Ben Vickery provided insight into his key penalty save in our 3-1 Under-18 Premier League North win over Newcastle.

The 16-year-old was back in the matchday squad following an injury to his fingers.

And he slotted straight back in to Oliver Reiss’ side, making vital saves to help City earn a 10th successive win in all competitions.

Goals from Dexter Oliver and Christian Dunbar-McDonald gave City a three-goal lead.

But the Magpies fought hard to try and find a way back into the game and caused City issues for the last 25 minutes.

In that period, Vickery made a vital save to deny Kacey Wooster before denying him again in added time when Newcastle were awarded a penalty.

The England Youth international went the right way, diving low to his left to deny Newcastle any hope of a late comeback.

“Unbelievable to be honest,” said Vickery when asked how he was feeling after another important win.

“Just happy to be back playing, playing with my four fingers!

“Making saves and making good decisions.

“Before the game we watched clips of their penalties. I don’t think it was the same boy playing who was striking it,” Vickery continued when asked how he came about to saving the spot-kick.

“But the way he ran up to it, his body shape, you could tell where he was going.”
