Lead coach Ben Wilkinson says City’s Elite Development Squad will learn the lessons from Wednesday’s defeat in our UEFA Youth League opener.

The City Under-19s went down 4-2 to Internazionale’s Under-19s at the Joie Stadium in what proved a game of fine margins.

From taking a second minute lead through Farid Alfa-Ruprecht, the City youngsters then conceded three times in 10 minutes to a talented Italian side.

Alfa-Ruprecht struck a second straight after the restart to narrow affairs with City then dominating before a late Inter smash and grab sealed victory.

For Wilkinson it was a frustrating outcome but reflecting on the match, he said he was in no doubt his players would learn and grow from the experience.

“From a coaches’ point of view it was a difficult game,” Ben reflected.

“To make such a positive start and then find ourselves conceding three goals after 20 minutes is really, really disappointing.

“For us it’s about learning the lessons of those 20 minutes.

“Before their late fourth goal I thought we were well on track to get back as we were doing a lot of positive things.

“So, when we sit down and reflect there will be some clear and obvious lessons for the young players in terms of managing the game.

“So yes, a lot to be disappointed about but there were a lot of positives to draw on too.”
