Elite Development Squad Lead Coach Ben Wilkinson says the Academy has outstanding players.

In our final game of 2025, our EDS drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the Premier League International Cup.

It was our second game with the Spanish outfit in six days, following our 4-0 triumph in the UEFA Youth League last week.

Emilio Lawrence’s strike cancelled out Cesar Palacio’s goal in what was an end-to-end, exciting game, which also saw Real Madrid reduced to 10 men in the second half.

The draw means our EDS enter the winter break on a run of five games unbeaten.

“I think there is some outstanding footballers on show,” began Wilkinson.

“When you look at the level of player on both teams, it’s been high.

“It’s been great to play them twice in a week, it was a fantastic opportunity for us, and I think over the two games we can be pleased with how we’ve done.

“And I think tonight also I feel there is more for us to give and stuff for us to take from the game to be better and how we can be a little bit more aggressive in the first half, be a bit higher up the pitch, be a bit more on the front foot, win more duels and then when we’ve got the ball be a bit more efficient with the way we use it.

“I think we gave the ball away too quickly and then had to defend again. And when you’re trying to be aggressive from a pressing point of view it’s hard.

It’s been a really good two games and something that for us has been a fantastic experience.”
