Head coach Ben Wilkinson said City were already excited about the prospect of an FA Youth Cup home quarter final with Spurs but admitted there were also lessons to learn from Wednesday’s 2-1 fifth round win over Reading.

For 60 minutes at the Joie Stadium, the City youngsters were in commanding form against the Royals having raced into a two goal lead inside 20 minutes and created a host of other openings.

But when the Royals reduced arrears on 68 minutes it made for a nervy finale though we held firm to seal our ticket through to that home date with Spurs next month.

“I thought we started really well and on the front foot and went into a 2-0 lead but maybe then went off the gas a little bit,” Wilkinson said.

“We had the opportunity to put the game to bed in the first 15 minutes of the second half but then Reading got a goal back and in the last 20 it was a real cup tie.

“It’s really good to be through but there are a lot of learnings for us too.

“In terms of now facing Spurs they are a really good side.

“We have had a few games with them in cup competitions in recent years which have been real top-level matches and we’ll have to be well prepared for them and I think it will be a top level FA Youth Cup tie.

“But we’ll be really excited for an FA Youth Cup home quarter-final.”
