Lead coach Ben Wilkinson said City’s dominant 4-0 UEFA Youth League win away at Slovan Bratislava was just reward for his side’s patient, controlled approach.

Despite enjoying near total domination, City’s Under-19s had to bide their time before finally making the breakthrough on 44 minutes through Jacob Wright’s penalty.

That paved the way for further goals after the break from Matty Warhurst, Wright again substitute Matty Henderson-Hall.

It was our opening win the UEFA Youth League and Wilkinson believes his players approached the match with maturity and understanding about what is required in Europe.

“The patience of the team was quite good. We spoke about the keeping the ball and limiting opportunities for them and keeping the crowd quiet,” Wilkinson said.

“So that control was really pleasing as was the fact that we did not do things that were off plan - I think that was key.

“We’ve now got 21 goals in six games – I think we’ve got the benefit of a lot of good attacking players and a structure that allows us to commit players high up the pitch.

“There are also still aspects where we can get better so it’s also pleasing that there is more to come.”
