The hosts snatched all three points in the 97th-minute, when Lewis Thompson turned a free-kick in from close range, after City ‘keeper James Trafford had been sent off for a collision with a Rovers’ forward.
It was a cruel ending for Enzo Maresca’s side, who had established an early lead when James McAtee fired into the top corner from 18-yards and dominated for long periods of the game.
But they handed the Lancashire outfit a lifeline when Connor McBride scored with a rare shot on goal in the 71st minute, before Thompson struck to inflict an agonising defeat.
