It proved a frustrating evening at the Toughsheet Community Stadium for Ben Wilkinson’s youngsters in what was our second Group E assignment.
Pitted against a streetwise and experienced League One side, it was always going to be a testing examination.
And a three-goal salvo inside 15 first half minutes from the hosts ultimately proved decisive.
Sam Dalby fired Bolton ahead on nine minutes and the hosts then struck again through John McAtee on 15 minutes and Aaron Morley on 23 minutes.
It was a real body blow but City, to their credit, continued to press and look to threaten Bolton.
Ultimately though the hosts stood firm to make it two wins out of two and move top of Group E.
For second-placed City, who have three points, our hopes of sealing a top-two finish - and with it a place in the knockout stages - will now come down to next month’s group finale at Rotherham.
