An extra time strike from Divin Mubama fired Ben Wilkinson’s youngsters into the quarter-finals after what was a tense and engrossing clash with the Merseysiders.
Mubama had struck first for City’s Under-21s on 19 minutes, heading home after Ashton Muir’s initial effort had been parried.
But Liverpool proved a real threat all evening and the visitors drew level on 68 minutes when Tommy Pilling scored from close range.
With neither side able to find a winner in the remainder of normal time, the clash went into the drama and tension of extra time.
There City upped the attacking ante and it was no less than the hosts deserved when Mubama struck again on 107 minutes, the centre forward netting from close range after substitute Ryan McAidoo’s initial shot had been blocked.
That proved enough to break Liverpool’s resistance and send City into the last eight where we will meet Arsenal with the quarter-final clash set to be played at the Joie Stadium next weekend.
