Leading man Jake Wain said it was a huge honour to be handed the captain’s armband as City’s Under-18s opened the new Premier League North season with a 2-1 home win over Liverpool.

Goals from Teddie Lamb and Archie Thornton sealed a deserved victory for Lauris Coggin’s youngsters as City began the defence of our regional title in winning fashion.

There were a host of impressive individual displays not least from midfielder Wain who said he had relished the responsibility of being entrusted with leading the team.

“I found out before the game in the auditorium [I would be captain] – it was heartening to get the armband,” said Wain.

“And as a second year [scholar] and leader I’ve just got to [try to] bring the boys together and [look to] get a successful season.

“It feels good to get the three points.

“It got close towards the end, but we got over the line and the win.”
