In what proved a high calibre affair in Portugal, though City substitute Teddie Lamb found the target late in the second half, the hosts ultimately prevailed thanks to a first half brace and a late third goal.
It was tough on City who carved out several opportunities and who also saw Christian Dunbar-McDonald hit the bar.
But with five games remaining in the league phase, Reiss backed his players to digest the lessons and come back strong.
“It’s an international game and we were expecting a lot of quality from Porto so that wasn’t a surprise,” the coach reflected.
“I think both teams were maybe a bit nervous at the beginning and the further the game went maybe we could see they were a little bit more mature than us at times.
“I don’t know if it was a 3-1 result at the end - they had more good actions than us though we had the better phases.
“But at the end you have to be clinical.
“It’s all about development [of the players] but we always go into the game looking to win. Developing means what can I do better to win the games.
“So there are lessons for us and we can work on the good phases and talk about the actions we need.”
