Having already sealed the Under-18 Premier League North title in April, Ben Wilkinson‘s youngsters were hoping to get the better of their southern counterparts and set a new record.
No side had previously won three successive National titles, and it looked like that would continue when Kamari Doyle put Southampton ahead just after the 15-minute mark.
However, City responded defiantly and goals from Tai Sodje and Dire Mebude had us in front before the break.
First, Sodje stole in ahead of Saints stopper Eddie Beach to poke home Mebude’s cross inside seven minutes of us falling behind.
And Mebude turned from provider to scorer soon after, latching on to Carlos Borges‘ ball in behind before finding the far corner of the hosts’ net.
Although City couldn’t build on that lead, it was enough to see us over the line and create Under-18 Premier League history.
