Just like the fans of the invisible man... we're not really here!

Just like the fans of the invisible man... we’re not really here!

What does it mean to be a City fan? How do you express the drama and emotion of the beautiful game?

This week, the Contact Theatre is hosting a special production, showcasing those very themes - and it’s been a hit!

The UK premiere of ‘We’re Not Really Here’ - a football opera, depicting the highs and lows of the City faithful - made its debut at the Oxford Road venue on a sold-out Wednesday night, allowing fans and non-football fans to experience football like never before.

In this unique show, the audience are placed centre stage to watch a cast of up to 100 genuine Blues sat in the ‘terraces’, re-enacting a typical matchday.

With the theatre transformed into a stadium, the audience experience the game from a player’s perspective as they witness a ground full of excited and emotional fans.

Tender, intimate and ear-splittingly loud in good measure, this 90-minute rollercoaster of emotion offers a rare insight into the theatrical element of football fandom.

Clubs in the Czech Republic, Holland, Finland and Ireland have previously showcased this theatrical piece but this is the first time it has been shown in England, and with a club with the scale and reputation of City.

It has been devised by a team of acclaimed, international and professional creatives, which includes the directors of legendary Belgian theatre company het Kip.
