Melbourne is proud to be a multi-cultural city with more than 36% of the population born overseas.
Yet despite having multi-culturalism at its heart, many young people experience a sense of loneliness and dislocation when they first arrive in the city.
Mo, aged 18, and other Young Leaders from the I Speak Football project are working to tackle this issue by harnessing the power of football to reach out to 1,800 children and young people across Melbourne, providing a safe space and an inclusive network where they will build new friendships.
In addition, I Speak Football also offers language and homework support that will help young people develop both in and outside of the classroom.
“I think football transcends cultural differences. I think every person, no matter how you grew up, football has that influence on people. That feeling of being free.” said Mo.
“Our project deals with discrimination and social inclusion using the power of football.
“When I first moved to Melbourne I struggled to meet new people and make friends.
“The easiest way for me to learn was through football and through coaching these kids I see myself when I was growing up.”
This project is delivered by Melbourne City in the Community.
