Today’s Goal of the Day came during the 1984/85 season, with Manchester City playing in the second tier of English football.

Gordon Smith scored it, a close range strike that gave City the lead away at Huddersfield, a game the Blues went on to win 2-0.

Clive Wilson showed tenaciousness to win the ball inside the Huddersfield area and play the ball to Jim Melrose, whose shot was saved…but there was Smith to score from the rebound.

City ended the season in the third automatic promotion place, just ahead of Portsmouth on goal difference, while Huddersfield finished 13th.

Smith played 50 times for City, scoring 14 goals, and finished the 1985/85 season as the club’s top goalscorer before leaving to join Oldham.
