Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s defeat to Monaco was not simply down to his defenders.
The tie finished 6-6 on aggregate after Monaco’s 3-1 second-leg victory, with the Ligue 1 side going through on the away goals rule.
Monaco started quickly and they took the lead in the seventh minute as Kylian Mbappe tapped in from close range after Bernard Mendy’s cross.
Things went to bad to worse for the Blues in the 28th minute when Fabinho slotted home from ten yards out to draw Monaco level on aggregate.
It was a rejuvenated City that appeared for the second half and they created plenty of chances.
The pressure paid off in the 70th minute when Danijel Subasic pushed Raheem Sterling’s shot into the path of Leroy Sane, who applied the finish at the back post to restore City’s aggregate lead.
But Tiemoue Bakayoko’s header with 13 minutes remaining saw City exit the Champions League.
