Gabriel Jesus says Sergio Aguero deserves to become City’s all-time record goalscorer.
The Argentine striker equalled Eric Brook’s tally of 177 with a coolly-taken penalty in the 3-0 victory over Burnley and could better that in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup visit of Wolves.
Jesus, who is in a rich vein of goalscoring form himself, expressed his delight for his teammate, adding he feels honoured to play alongside a player of Kun’s calibre.
“I get on with Sergio very well,” he declared. “He’s an amazing guy.
“All of us know what type of player he is. He’s a fantastic person and I’m a fan of his.
“It’s very good to play with him. When you have a good relationship off the pitch, it’s easier to bring it on to the pitch. That’s what we have.
“We help each other and that helps Manchester City. We both defend the shirt of this Club so we pull together on the pitch the same way we get along off the pitch.
“It’s very important in a player’s career – especially for a striker – to score a lot of goals.
“I support him and I hope he can beat the record as soon as possible. He deserves to become the top scorer of this Club.”
Jesus spoke equally highly of manager Pep Guardiola.
“He’s a winner,” he continued. “He’s won all of the championships he’s been in. His winning character has helped him win everything in his career.
“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to be coached by a great manager and a great person. I’m very proud to be part of his team. He can teach me a lot of things.”
The Brazilian striker has never been on the losing side with City, with the Blues on an impressive run of form.
Guardiola’s men have equalled their all-time record of consecutive victories in all competitions and Jesus hopes his side will continue their run to fulfil his dream of lifting the Premier League trophy.
On the subject of City’s winning streak and a year of playing without defeat, he added: “It’s really good. The team has been working hard and to win games is very important.
“I’m very happy to have been all this time without losing a game but it’s not only me – it’s thanks to the teams and teammates I have played in, such as Palmeiras, the Brazilian national team and now Manchester City.
“I’m very happy for achieving that milestone of a whole year without a defeat but I must keep working hard in the training sessions and keep performing well in the games.
“It’s a good feeling. We are going to try to keep the momentum, win games and fight for trophies until the end of the season.
“It’s very important [to play good football]. There might be games where we are going to win without playing that well.
“We need to face the games with the goal of winning but also try to deserve to win by playing good football. There will be games where we’ll have to show character and win – no matter how.
“Football is very different in Brazil to how it is here. I was very happy to be able to win the trophy in Brazil, which is very difficult.
“In Brazil, there are 20 teams and 12-13 of them are real contenders for the championship. Here there are fewer contenders.
“I’m going to give my best to help the team - as the rest of my teammates will - to be able to lift the Premier League trophy.
“It’s a dream that I have always dreamt of: being part of it and being able to win this trophy. I would feel really happy and satisfied.
“If we keep playing this way, I think we have lots of chances to reach the end of the season with the opportunity of winning a trophy but there are still many games left.
“There is a long way to go – the championship has just started. We need to keep performing well, deserving to win and we will reach the end of the season with chances to win.
“I’m very happy for being able to make my dream come true and show everyone coming from a humble environment in Brazil that everybody is able to do it.
“Everyone is able to reach their dreams. I’m very happy for having started my personal story in Jardim Peri [Sao Paulo]. I’m very proud of my roots. I learnt a lot and the life in the ‘favela’ taught me a lot - things that help even today.”
On living in Manchester, he added: “I’m really enjoying it. I’m a really calm person. Obviously, in terms of the city, I miss some things I had when I was living in Brazil but I’ve been very happy since I arrived.
“Everything is working out. I like challenges so for me, it has been wonderful, living here.”
