Pep Guardiola says he can ‘feel’ when a player has the attributes to be utilised in multiple positions.
It’s a trait for which he has been famed for throughout his managerial career, with midfielders Fabian Delph and Oleksandr Zinchenko the latest pair to perform out of position at left-back.
The Catalan admits though, that his system must be right to ensure players can flourish in an unfamiliar position.
“You see it in training,” said Guardiola ahead of Saturday’s trip to Burnley.
“You feel it. Players like Zinchenko, if he defends for 90 minutes he will suffer more but if we dominate he can attack from left-back.”
The manager is expecting a tough test against the Clarets, who he declared were one of his side’s toughest games last season and he may have to do without the talents of David Silva.
The Spaniard was withdrawn early against West Brom and Pep revealed the midfielder will be assessed in training before a decision is made on whether he is fit to play.
