The German winger produced a fine individual display against the Bundesliga opponents, setting up Sergio Aguero’s first-half equaliser.
Sane also had a strong shout for a penalty turned down after he appeared to be brought down in the box by the Hoffenheim keeper.
“Hoffenheim are a strong side and we knew it would be tough, so we are very happy to have won,” said Leroy.
“But we know that we still have four finals left in the rest of the group stage games.
“This was an important step but there are still tough games ahead.”
