Pep Guardiola has outlined the importance of scoring at Anfield as his side prepare to take on Liverpool in one of the most highly anticipated Premier League matches of the season…

Last season, the two North West sides met four times as City locked horns with the Reds in both the Premier League and the Champions League quarter-final. Out of the four meetings, Pep’s side secured one victory as the Blues were defeated in the League and knocked out of the European competition in devastating fashion.

As the Blues take on the Merseysiders once again, the boss has outlined what his side need to do if they are to seal their first win at Anfield in 15 years.

“We try (not to concede) but sometimes you cannot,” Pep explained. “I didn’t like concede to Hoffenheim in the first minute either.

“The other option is to stay back and defend for 90 minutes but I don’t believe in that.

“The problem (against Liverpool) in Premier League (last season) is that we conceded three goals in five or six minutes and we have to avoid doing that.

“We have to score at Anfield, but they are going to score too - it’s quite complicated. If we don’t score we won’t win.”

The media also asked whether Guardiola would leave Raheem Sterling out of the squad against his old side due to response from the Liverpool fans.

“The only time he didn’t play was tactical reasons and was always the plan, but I never think about that (leaving him out due to Liverpool fans) because that happened,” Pep added.

“Maybe it affects him but he has to learn and is young.

“Hopefully he will be here for a long time with us. He has good memories about his career at Liverpool.”
