Foden’s first strike doubled our lead when the teenager offered the latest example of his precocious talent, weaving past Dan Butler before beating Day at his near post.

He then netted our third – providing the perfect response to Newport’s goal to help book our place in the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the match, the Stockport-born midfielder believes City were able to show their quality on tough pitch conditions at Rodney Parade.

“We still tried to stick to game plan,” Foden told ManCity.com. “We are Premier League footballers so we can handle any pitch, and we showed our quality on a very difficult pitch tonight.

“It’s so important to do our best in all competitions and it was great to get the win today.

“We are still in all competitions and we want to keep fighting for everyone.”
