Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Vincent Kompany after the Belgian’s performances against Chelsea and West Ham.

Kompany was side-lined for almost two months because of a muscle injury but has been fast-tracked back into the first team following a busy fixture schedule.

And while admitting that the centre-back’s fitness needs to be monitored, Kompany’s performance levels are of no concern to the boss.

He said: “it’s incredible because he is the only guy I (have) met in my career who doesn’t train for two months, does one and a half sessions and then plays at a high level.

“He’s an experienced player, we can’t use him regularly because of his problems but when he’s fit, he’s an incredible player.”

Pep believes his captain’s footballing intelligence is key to his consistency on the pitch and is a crucial reason for Kompany’s importance to the side.

He said: “he knows his position perfectly, he’s so clever, he understands the game, he understands his position.

“I spoke with him many times and he likes to play in the way we play, and he adapts with that quite well.”

In terms of the Premier League title run-in, Pep kept his cards close to his chest, before referring to his side’s quick turnaround following last Sunday’s penalty shoot-out victory in the Carabao Cup final and Wednesday’s 1-0 home win over West Ham.

“We are in a position, 30 points to play for, 10 games left, one point behind Liverpool… anything can happen,” the boss acknowledged.

“I was impressed after 120 minutes how well they played against West Ham. We did incredibly well.

“But now the recovery is less, we don’t play at eight like (against) West Ham, we played at three (against Bournemouth on Saturday) … we aren’t training, just recovering.”
