Pep Guardiola said he knew Southampton would post a stern test as they continue to bounce back from their recent 9-0 defeat against Leicester City.
The defending Premier League champions were made to work hard for a 2-1 victory against the Saints and found themselves behind early on as James Ward-Prowse found the net following Ederson’s save from Stuart Armstrong’s shot.
City dominated possession and with 20 minutes remaining, Sergio Aguero found some space in the box and fired us level after good play by Kyle Walker.
Walker himself then went on to strike the winner with just three minutes left, making the Etihad erupt.
“Our problem for these two games was to live with a team who had suffered,” said Guardiola. “I knew they would battle for the duels, defend the corners, wait for set-pieces, wait for one counter attack.
“We knew it and it was difficult, but even with that we had incredibly good momentum in the first-half and in the second-half we were so intense and so aggressive and that is why we did it.”
