City boss Nick Cushing hailed the performance of goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck after her stunning saves helped us to claim a 1-0 victory in the historic Manchester derby.
It was Caroline Weir who sealed the win with a 25-yard wonder-strike into the top corner, but if it wasn’t for our talented shot-stopper, we could have dropped valuable points.
“Every point is so important and a win is a really good start,” Cushing said. “Ellie kept us in the game and she deserves a pat on the back”.
Early in the first half, United found themselves in space on the left flank. With a driven ball across the face of goal, the deadlock was about to be broken. However, Roebuck managed to quickly stretch her arm to the right and palm the close range effort to safety with a superb save.

Applause from a record-breaking crowd of 31,213 flooded the Etihad, an atmosphere Cushing felt from sidelines.
“It was a great occasion to play in front of 31,000,” he added. “I hope we’ve shown them the team is worth following.”
Our women’s side head to Lugano next to compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Cushing noted how this victory is “the start of a big week, and hopefully we can follow this up in Europe.”
