Skipper Steph Houghton says she and her City colleagues are eager to create yet more history when we kick-off the new FA Women’s Super League campaign with Saturday’s historic Etihad derby clash against Manchester United.

It will be the first-ever professional women’s Manchester derby and promises to be a memorable occasion.

England captain Houghton is no stranger to big games, of course, but admitted she was especially excited about the prospect of launching the new campaign against newly-promoted United.

“You’re always excited for the first fixture of the season and to have it as United and at the Etihad, it’s going to be an unbelievable occasion and all the girls will be up for,” said Houghton.

“Ever since I’ve been at the club it’s all been about making history. It’s massive - we want to be involved in big games all the time and it doesn’t get bigger than this one.

“Ever since the fixtures came out in the summer, everyone has been so excited about the game. Our preparations have gone really well in pre-season and we’ll do everything we can to ensure we go out and get three points.”
