Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s young players deserve the first team opportunities he is giving them.

Seventeen-year-old Taylor Harwood-Bellis scored on his fourth appearance for the Club in the 4-1 FA Cup win over Port Vale, in which Phil Foden was named Man of the Match and Tommy Doyle emerged from the bench.

Guardiola likes the idea of homegrown fans playing for the Club, but is adamant the promising trio are being selected because they have proven their ability.

“Of course, it’s important [to have local players] with Taylor, Phil and Tommy” he said.

“It’s good. It’s not because they are English, it’s because we believe they can do it.

“In this level we don’t give presents, so they have to win this chance. What we have seen so far, they have the quality to help us. With this amount of games, we have space for everyone.”
