Six years ago to the day: the first of six!

On 16 October 2014, City’s women’s team lifted our first piece of major silverware, defeating Arsenal in an incredible underdog story.

Navigating our debut season in the top flight, no-one expected Nick Cushing’s side to complete our maiden campaign with a trophy... but we did.

Against all odds, we triumphed over the much-fancied Gunners - the most successful side in English women’s football - to clinch a famous win.

A side mixed with youth and experience - a blend of the original City Ladies squad and England internationals - was selected for our first major Cup Final, and they certainly stood up to the task.

Karen Bardsley produced an impressive display to preserve our clean sheet and as a result, Cushing’s side grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Having soaked up first-half pressure, we dominated the second period. Captain Steph Houghton went close twice with two trademark free-kicks, but the decisive moment would arrive courtesy of Izzy Christiansen, who rose to head home Krystle Johnston’s pinpoint delivery with just 18 minutes left on the clock.

City survived a late onslaught to upset the odds and Houghton lifted the trophy she had once clinched with the Gunners to make City history.
