In what was an entertaining and fiercely-contested clash in the Black Country, Willy Boly had given the hosts a second half lead although video replays appeared to suggest the ball had gone in via his hand.

But Pep Guardiola’s side dug deep to fight back and Laporte rose to power in a superb 69th minute header to get the Blues back on level terms.

It could so easily have been all three points with Sergio Aguero (twice) and Raheem Sterling both hitting the woodwork.

But Guardiola expressed his satisfaction with the response of his players with the focus now switching to next Saturday’s tea-time assignment at home to Newcastle United.
