Manchester City bowed out of this season’s Women’s Champions League at the Last 16 stage after a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid.

After drawing 1-1 in Manchester, a 2-1 second leg loss in Spain proved to be the difference, with a Steph Houghton own goal and Angela Sosa strike sealing our fate before Pauline Bremer’s late consolation.

With half-time approaching, the opener arrived when a looping cross was fired back in at the far post, ricocheting off Houghton and into the net.

The hosts then doubled their lead midway through the second 45, with Ellie Roebuck’s impressive save from the lively Charlyn Corral falling at the feet of Sosa, who made no mistake from close-range.

Pauline Bremer gave City hope late on with an instinctive finish after a long throw from Megan Campbell caused havoc in the box, but we could not mount a late fightback.

One positive to take from the game was the full debut of England striker Ellen White, who slid an effort just wide of Sari van Veenendaal’s goal early on.

But that will be scant consolation for Nick Cushing’s side, who were visibly disappointed that their efforts had not been enough to put our name in the pot for the quarter finals.
