Relive Manchester City’s historic derby victory over Manchester United in the Women’s Super League curtain-raiser at the Etihad.

Ahead of Sunday’s eagerly-awaited Continental Cup Manchester Derby, relive Manchester City’s historic 1-0 Derby victory over United in the Women’s Super League curtain-raiser at the Etihad.

In front of a league record crowd of 31,213, Caroline Weir’s thunderbolt early in the second half was enough to give Nick Cushing’s side the bragging rights in our first ever professional clash with United.

But the team did not have it all their own way, and went in at the break frustrated by a lacklustre first half performance.

After a few honest words threaded with some encouragement in the dressing room from manager and players alike, City found their rhythm.

It had the desired effect, as within minutes of the restart, Caroline Weir picked up possession on the edge of the box and unleashed a 25-yard rocket to grab us all three points.

We were thankful that the woodwork preserved the win at the death following a deflected effort from Jackie Groenen, but Nick Cushing’s side dug in and ground out a hard-earned opening day win.
