Nemanja Matic fired the visitors into a surprise lead ten minutes before the break, with City having a goal ruled out just a few minutes later for offside.
Matic was then sent off for his second bookable offence with just under 15 minutes remaining in the match, before Sergio Aguero found the net, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside again.
City remained resolute and hung on to secure a date at Wembley against Aston Villa in March.
