Manuel Akanji expressed his delight after playing his first 90 minutes of football in over three months during the goalless Premier League draw with Southampton.

The defender had made substitute appearances in our last three league encounters, but was handed a start at St Mary’s Stadium by manager Pep Guardiola.

The Swiss international was typically cool and calm on the ball, whilst remaining focused and agile in defensive situations.

Omar Marmoush struck the bar in stoppage time, whilst Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale kept alert to deny Akanji and Ruben Dias from goalbound headers earlier in the half.

When asked in his post-match interview with City Studios if it felt good to play 90 minutes again after his spell on the sidelines, Akanji said: “Yeah definitely. First 90 minutes after my injury. I’m really happy that the manager gave me the trust again to start.

“It was a bit tough for the last 15, 20 minutes, because the last time I played 90 minutes was before Real Madrid. So yeah it’s been some time.

“I’m happy to be back. I wish it would have been with three points but hopefully we can get the trophy next weekend.”

The defender also spoke about City’s chances in front of goal against the Saints and touched on the race for Champions League qualification.
