Phil Foden has hailed the genius of Pep Guardiola for the subtle tactical tweak that allowed him to set up Kevin De Bruyne for the winning goal in Manchester City’s Champions League quarter-final first leg victory over Atletico Madrid.

The Academy graduate climbed off the bench to deliver a slide rule pass for the Belgian, who fired past Jan Oblak to give City a precious lead ahead of the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Foden says it was an instinctive move to pick out his team-mate, but praised Guardiola for the decision to play narrower in a bid to unlock Atleti’s stubborn defence.

“He [Guardiola] kind of changed the shape a little bit and played me more inside,” said the 21-year-old.

“He’s a genius isn’t he.

“I knew when I got the ball it was very tight. As I turned, I saw Kev run off his man and I saw his legs open and it was just instinct and I managed to play the ball through.

“I was very happy and was just delighted we had broken them down to take a good result back to their place.

“I think it’s going to be a similar game. Maybe, if the result stays the same, they are going to have to come a bit more aggressively out of the space and try and attack the channels a little bit.

“If they come at us, we know we have got that footballing side that we can show as well.”
