Cole Palmer says he was determined to prove he belongs in the first team in Manchester City’s charity game against Barcelona.

The Academy graduate was on target in a Man of the Match performance as City draw 3-3 at the Nou Camp, where he converted Joao Cancelo’s cross to finish off a well-worked move for our second goal.

The friendly match was held in support of Pep Guardiola’s friend and former Bacelona player and coach Juan Carlos Unzue, who has been diagnosed with the incurable neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

It was an evening about much more than football, but for Palmer it was a chance to showcase his talents against top-class opposition as he bids to establish himself in the senior set-up.

“When I go out there, I’ve got to take my opportunity,” he told mancity.com.

“Tonight wasn’t really a friendly for me, because I’ve got to prove myself.

“When I play, I have to score and have to assist so I’m glad I’ve done that.

“Hopefully I’ll get some game time as the season goes on. I have just got to keep focused and keep working hard and it will come.”
