The midfielder showcased his superb technique to calmly volley Kevin De Bruyne’s brilliant cross past Álvaro Fernández in the 16th minute to clinch City’s 10th successive victory in the league.

Moments earlier Brentford had seen Ederson make a reflex save to prevent Ruben Dias turning Yoane Wissa’s cross into his own net and, from the resulting corner, the Brazilian goalkeeper saved with his foot to deny Wissa again.

That was as good as it got for the Bees, though they made life difficult for a City side who enjoyed 78% possession.

Another superb ball from De Bruyne saw Foden glance inches wide of the far post and the Belgian also cracked the woodwork with a low drive from the edge of the area, whilst the goalscorer and Aymeric Laporte both had headers ruled out for offside by VAR.
