Pep Guardiola’s men moved eight points clear at the top of the table after Phil Foden scored the only goal of the game to seal our 10th consecutive victory in the league.
Foden converted Kevin De Bruyne’s teasing cross with a composed first-time finish to break the deadlock in the 16th minute on a night where a dominant City side were often frustrated by a spirited performance from the hosts.
Seconds before the opener Brentford had twice come close to scoring themselves.
Ederson produced a fine reflex save to prevent Ruben Dias from diverting Yoane Wissa’s cross into his own net and the Brazilian then stretched out a toe to deny the same player from a shot following a corner.
City were hardly troubled after that and though facing a stubborn Bees’ defence, might have won by more.
Foden and Aymeric Laporte both had headers ruled out for offside by VAR, whilst the goalscorer was also inches away from netting a second when he glanced another brilliant De Bruyne ball just wide and the Belgian then saw a low drive from distance cannon back off the post.
