City were beaten in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw against last season’s Premier League runners-up.
After a goalless first half, Pep Guardiola’s side finally took the lead in the 77th minute when Cole Palmer curled in a wonderful strike from the edge of the box.
But the Gunners equalised in the 111th minute when Leandro Trossard’s shot deflected off Manuel Akanji.
The clash went straight to a shootout and Arsenal scored all four while Kevin De Bruyne hit the bar and Rodrigo’s penalty was saved.
