Pep Guardiola says he was more than happy with the contribution of Kalvin Phillips in the 3-0 win over Bristol City.

The England midfielder has had to be patient after injury, the World Cup and the form of Rodrigo have all limited his playing time.

But the former Leeds United star looked calm and assured in only his second start of the campaign, rattling the crossbar in the opening minutes for good measure.

“It’s not easy when you don’t play much,” admitted Guardiola.

“Immediately to play in this type of game,  it’s not easy for him.

“He played more than well. Of course he needs the rhythm and the contribution, but it was important to give Rodri time.

“We need him and we can rely on him and we need him and that’s the most important thing.”
