Esports students from Manchester’s City charity, City in the Community (CITC), travelled to Seoul, South Korea to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime, educational experience.

Partnered with Gen G, an esports organisation in South Korea, students undertook six days of work experience opportunities, as well as having the opportunity to explore Seoul.

Students received lectures and classes from key Gen G team members, learning more about the behind-the-scenes of the esports industry, as well as the development seen over recent years in South Korea.

Students also had the opportunity to explore cultural landmarks and historic spots in Seoul, allowing them to not only learn about the Korean esports industry, but to expand their cultural insight of South Korea as well.

Discussing their time in Seoul, one participant Kenzie, said:

“I enjoyed so much of it [the trip]. I most enjoyed learning about esports in depth and more of the business side of things rather than just the gaming aspect, because esports is a lot less game focused than you realised.”

Another participant Rio, commented on the trip saying:

“We were shown what kind of jobs we can get through esports and it’s [the trip] really helped me decide what I want to do with my career.”

The CITC Esports programme offers an exceptional opportunity for students who are passionate about both esports and education to merge the two as part of their academic journey.

Delivered at Oldham College in partnership with Manchester City, this programme is designed to be fully inclusive, welcoming both male and female participants.

It allows students to develop technical skills and gain invaluable insights into the esports industry.

Participants have the opportunity to gain a Level 2 Certificate in Esports after one year and a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Esports if they complete the full two years of the programme.

The objective of the course is to provide students with comprehensive education and training in esports, as well as aiming to develop technical skills, offer industry insight, and prepare students for various careers within the esports world.
